The play was written by the French playwright and novelist Nancy Houston to the request of a Swiss theatre director in 2009. Nancy Houston approaches the story of Oedipus in a contemporary way and she decides that the main characters of the play are going to be women: the wife (mother) of the king and his daughters. The character of Oedipus is determinative in dramatic literature and in psychology as well. But we don’t know Jocasta, the woman who was the mother of Oedipus, her wife for twenty years and the mother of his children. History doomed her to silence. But this play presents her as a vibrating, sharp-witted, determined woman, giving her back – this way – her well deserved place.
